There are a lot of great things that can be said about
southern cooking.
The great traditions of the south are seen in areas to the south of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Ohio River, Missouri, Texas, and Oklahoma. Americans residing in these areas love squash,
tomatoes, grits, and corn. They particularly enjoy deep pit barbecue, which was a practice inherited from American Indians from the southwest, specifically Native Americans that belonged to the
Seminole, Caddo and Choctaw tribes.
When it comes to the south, people do love their flour, milk, and sugar. When it comes to this, Europe influenced the trend. Every day, people from the south enjoy a hearty breakfast complete with
doughy creations and dairy that usually fills them up quite well.
A typical Southern meal includes pan-fried chicken, side bread, peas, plenty of greens, and mashed potato. Expect also to see a piece of pie or a cobbler on the side for dessert. There are plenty
of famous American soups like chicken noodle which have been influenced by southern folk.
Most of the time, southerners make and eat pies with pecan or apple fillings while the vegetables that they love include everything from okra to squash. Simple salads are usually prepared and there
is always a siding of bread may it be corn bread or biscuits. Food seems to taste better when the table has been set just right and so this is another thing that southerners attend to.
Something that can never be absent is corn bread. There is always hot bread in a southerner's oven because the people in the south simply love corn bread. If there are no biscuits, corn bread, or
rolls, you are not eating a southern meal.
Aside from flour, corn bread is made with the use of ingredients such as baking soda, baking powder, and salt. To this you will add wet ingredients including milk, eggs, and shortening. According
to one’s preference, sugar may be added as well.
You will need about a cup and a half of flour to start you off then you have to combine this with some milk, eggs, and shortening. Mix well and do not forget it. Put the mixture into muffin tins
that have been lined with grease.
Hot bread is what you can always expect in the south. They normally set oven temperatures beyond 400 degrees. Aside from not using plain old flour in their corn bread, southerners also use cornmeal
when the dough is placed on the skillet for cooking.
When it comes to this, the oven is set at a high temperature. Aside from not using plain old flour in their corn bread, southerners also use cornmeal when the dough is placed on the skillet for
cooking. The dough must not be thick at all, and this is possible upon mixing the ingredients very well.
